Can Velo Rides South! מה מקבלים כאשר משלבים בערב יפה וססגוני כלבי נחייה, ילדים קטנים, וזמר מעולה? ראינו את התוצאה ביום שני שעבר באירוע ההתרמה שהמרכז הישראלי לכלבי נחייה ארגן יחד עם אלי"ע – הארגון לילדים עיוורים. מאות האורחים נפגשו בלובי של אולם סמולרש באוניברסיטת תל אביב, לגמו קפה ויין וטעמו מהכיבוד הטעים, כאשר כלבי נחייה וגורים הסתובבו בין הקהל. מיקי חיימוביץ הנחתה את הערב המרגש, ונשאו דברים מיכאל סגל, יו"ר אלי"ע, נח בראון מהמרכז, וגיא שמחי, בוגר המרכז ויו"ר המרכז לעיוור בישראל. לאחר מכן הקהל התענג מהמופע המדהימה של שלומי שבת, שהקים הרבה אנשים בקהל על הרגליים. בין הקהל התארחו עשרות אנשים מחברות שונות אשר נתנו חסות לערב, וכ-30 חיילי צה"ל שנפצעו במבצע "צוק איתן" שהשתתפו בערב כאורחים מיוחדים. היה ערב מרגש לכולנו, וכל הכבוד לאלה שטרחו חודשים רבים לארגן את האירוע! שבוע אחרי האירוע המרכז עסוק בפעילות – קורס חדש של שלושה חניכים התחיל במרכז השבוע, הכולל שני קליינטים חדשים וקליינט אחד ותיק המקבל את כלבו השלישי. באותו הזמן, מתקיים קורס התנסות לשלושה קליינטים פוטנציאליים. בהצלחה לכל הצמדים החדשים! צילומים: אלי בן בוחר

What do you get when you combine guide dogs, kindergarten children, and a wonderful singer who gets the entire audience up on their feet? We found out last week at the gala fundraising event that the Israel Guide Dog Center for the Blind hosted with ELIYA at Smolarz Auditorium in Tel Aviv University. Hundreds of people socialized in the lobby, partaking of the scrumptious refreshments and sipping coffee and wine, while guide dogs and guide dog puppies mingled among the crowd. The evening was hosted by Micki Haimovich, and speakers included Michael Segal, President of ELIYA, Noach Braun, co-founder and CEO of the IGDCB, and Guy SImchi, a graduate of the Center and president of the Center for the Blind in Israel. Shlomi Shabbat then took the stage with his band, and soon had most of the audience on their feet. Among the audience were dozens of people from various companies who helped sponsor the event, and 30 IDF soldiers who were injured in the "Protective Edge" campaign last summer, who attended as special guests. It was an exciting evening for all of us, and many thanks to the people who worked for months organizing this gala event! The excitement of the event had no sooner died down when the Center was once again filled with activity. This week a course began under the instruction of Yariv in which two new clients received their first guide dog, and another client is receiving his third dog. A small step for a guide dog puppy......זהו צעד קטן לגור נחייה

but a big step for guide dogs in Israel! A new law, sponsored by M.K. Dov Lipman of Yesh Atid, calls for guide dog puppies in training to be allowed to enter public places - just like qualified guide dogs! During their first year of life, guide dog puppies live with adoptive families, who take them everywhere and expose them to shopping malls, restaurants, public transportation, and other surroundings they will need to deal with when they are qualified guide dogs in the future. If passed, the law will ensure that guide dog puppies experience these important places and not be turned away by people claiming that trainers and adoptive families are not blind, and therefore don't have the right to bring their dogs to public places. The sign that now stands at the eastern side of the entrance to the Center expresses our hopes for the future – the expansion of the facilities of the Israel Guide Dog Center for the Blind. The plan for the new facilities includes a new kennel that will be able to hold the larger number of dogs in training, renovation of the house that presently stands on the site, and additional infrastructures and landscaping that will join the new facilities with the present center. Another symbol of our hopes for the future are none other than our puppies! This month another litter was born, and there is another one on the way! The photo, taken by Eli Ben Boher, shows the three directors of our Friends' Organizations abroad holding puppies – Mike Leventhal (U.S.), Martin Segal (Great Britain) and Sara Gabriel (Canada), who visited the Center for the Friends' Seminar in October. In other news, this week four new clients completed a course and returned home with their new guide dogs, and two experienced clients completed their training at home with replacement dogs. We wish the best of luck and success to all six new guide dog teams!

איתן ולוטי - הצמד ה-500 שלנו! Eitan and Lottie - Our 500th Partnership

Eitan Negev, 45, from Bat Yam, and Lottie, a female Labrador retriever, are our 500th partnership! Eitan and Lottie are presently learning to work together in a domiciliary course with instructor Ami Toren. "Lottie is a lot different from Toffee, my previous dog," says Eitan. She's a lot more energetic, and learns very quickly. Sometimes there are issues that come up and I have to wait until Ami, my instructor, arrives the next day to deal with them. There is less of a formal framework at home than in a group course at the Center and that is a disadvantage of doing a home course." On the other hand, Eitan is pleased that after only five days together he and Lottie have completed tasks that would ordinarily be tackled only after a couple of weeks in a group course on campus at the Center. Eitan works as a guide at "Dialogue in the Dark" in Holon. The museum offers visitors a tour in total darkness through several rooms in which people can experience what it is like to encounter everyday situations without being able to see. "The museum is not about not seeing, but about using your other senses. That's what I tell the people who I guide in the museum." Eitan lost most of his vision 20 years ago as a result of retinitis pigmentosa (RP), and has had two previous guide dogs from the Center – Sidney and Toffee. He is hoping to retire Toffee with a family in Kibbutz Kfar Hanassi in northern Israel. Eitan has been a SCUBA diver since 2003, and is the first blind SCUBA diver in Israel. He is now certified to dive up to 42 meters, and has developed a unique language of communication with his fellow divers based upon the usual hand signs used by divers for communicating underwater. In this way Eitan communicates by touch with his buddy and backup to convey important information about safety and their surroundings, air gauge status, currents, and depth. When diving, Eitan is in charge of his team of three divers. He dives holding his buddy's hand, and in this way he can initiate or receive hand signals as well as retain proper balance, direction, and depth. What about the experience of seeing the sights and creatures underwater? Eitan carries a chain on which he has attached more than a dozen plastic replicas of underwater creatures. "When one of my comrades sees something underwater, he hands me the appropriate plastic figure, and because I could see at an earlier point in my life, I can imagine what they look like." In this way Eitan can experience the thrill of what lies underwater. He has also completed certification as a rescue diver to help another diver in distress. Eitan feels that people who were born blind tend to feel more at home using a cane than those who lose vision at a later point in life, but he has always felt more comfortable with a guide dog. "When I am with a dog, I'm a totally different person than I am with a cane!" As for being the Center's 500th partnership, Eitan hasn't thought about that yet. "We'll see what happens when we reach 1000!" אורחים מקרוב ומרחוק Guests from Near and Far

השבוע המרכז היה גדוש באורחים ואירועים מיוחדים. ביום ראשון הגיעו מספר מועמדים להשתתף בקורס הערכה של שלושה ימים. הקורס מאפשר למועמדים לחוות הליכה וטיפול בכלב נחייה בפעם הראשונה, ולשקול יחד עם המדריכים אם הם רוצים להמשיך בתהליך לקבלת כלב נחייה. ביום ראשון הבא יתחיל קורס של שבועיים ובו ארבעה עיוורים יקבלו את כלב הנחייה הראשון שלהם. בנוסף, עוד שני קורסים להחלפת כלב לנעזרים מנוסים יתקיימו בבתיהם בהדרכת עמי ויעל. השבוע התקיים סמינר של שלושה ימים בהם אירחנו את שלושת המנהלים של ארגוני הידידים של המרכז מחו"ל: מייק לבנתאל מארצות הברית, שרה גבריאל מקנדה, ומרטין סיגל מאנגליה. האורחים נפגשו עם צוות המרכז בנושאים של גיוס משאבים, התאמת תוכניות עתידיות, ושיטות עבודה. האורחים גם נפגשו עם ח"כ דוב ליפמן ובוגרי המרכז, וסיירו במוזיאון "דיאלוג בחשכה" בחולון. השבוע המשלחת השנתית שלנו יצאה לפולין ללמוד על השואה. המשלחת כללה 6 נעזרים, כלביהם, ומלווים. אורחת נוספת במרכז השבוע היא טליה האבל מלונדון, בת ה-17, שמתנדבת לשבוע של עבודה בכלבייה. טליה מתנדבת במסגרת פרוייקט מדליית הזהב של הדוכס של אדינבורו, המעודדת צעירים לבצע משימות למידה, הכשרה, והתנדבות. טליה כבר בצעה מטלות של כושר גופני בלימוד קורס מצילים, ומסע למלאווי שבאפריקה. היא הכירה את המרכז דרך דודה שגרה בנסן ציונה, והחליטה לשלב את האהבה שלה לחיות במשימת ההתנדבות שלה. אנו מאחלים לטליה הצלחה, ומקווים שצעירים נוספים יגיעו אלינו דרך פרוייקט חשוב זה. בתמונה: טליה עם הכלב נאון, אלי בן בוחר

This week the center was filled with activity and guests. On Sunday several candidates arrived at the center for a three-day assessment course during which they experienced walking with and caring for a guide dog for the first time. Next Sunday four new guide dog users will begin a two-week course with Netanel, and will receive their first guide dogs. In addition, two more experienced guide dog users will be receiving dogs in domiciliary courses. A three-day seminar was also held this week with that was attended by the three executive directors of our three Friends' Organizations from abroad: the: Mike Leventhal from the American Friends, Sara Gabriel from Canadian Friends, and Martin Segal from British Friends. The guests met with the marketing and fundraising, and planning staff of the Center, and discussed long and short – term goals. The group also met with M.K. Dov Lipman and visited the "Dialogue in the Dark" Museum in Holon. In other news, our delegation is presently visiting Poland on an educational tour to learn about the Holocaust. The delegation includes guide dog users, their escorts, and dogs. Another guest at the center this week was 17-year-old Talia Hubble, a young woman from London who is doing her Duke of Edinborough Gold Medal. Talia has already completed several of the tasks required to receive the gold medal, including a trek in Malawi and a certification as a life guard. Her in-residence volunteer task has been to work at the Center assisting in the kennels. Talia became acquainted with the Center through her aund who lives in Nes Tziona. She is an avid animal lover and decided that helping care for future guide dogs would be an appropriate task for her. Blind and Sighted Runners and Bikers Compete at Roim Rahok 4 אצנים ורוכבים עיוורים ורואים מתחרים ב"רואים רחוק 4"

חג סוכות מלא אירועים במרכז השנה בחול המועד סוכות כמו בשלושת השנים האחרונות התקיים אירוע הספורט "רואים רחוק" – אירוע הספורט הייחודי לרואים ועיוורים. באירוע היו מרוצים של 10, 5, ו-2 קילומטרים של ריצה והליכה ומרוץ אופני טנדם של כ-20 קילומטרים. חורשת הפקאנים במרכז היה גדוש ברצים ורוכבים, מבקרים, ילדים, ומעודדים, שהגיעו ל"רואים רחוק 4". האורחים סיירו בכלבייה, נהינו מכיבוד וממעגקל המתופפים, ומהאווירה ומזג אוויר הנפלא בצל חורשת הפקאנים. האירוע הססגוני התקיים בזכות עשרות מתנדבים ועובדי המרכז, שתרמו מזמנם ומאמציהם משעות המוקדמות שהבוקר וימים רבים לפני כן, ואנו רוצים להגיד לכולם תודה! בתמונה רואים את קטי ואיתן, שזכו במקום השני במרוץ אופני הטנדם.
בחדשות אחרות השבוע הבא, יתקיים קורס הערכה לשלושה מועמדים לקבלת כלבי נחייה, המשלחת של שישה בוגרים, הכלבים שלהם, ומלווים תצא לפולין לסיור לימודי על השואה, וכיתה חדשה של כלבים תתחיל הערכה ואימונים. השבוע יגיעו למרכז שלושת המנהלים של שלושת ארגוני הידידים של המרכז בחו"ל – מייק לבנתל מארה"ב, שרה גבריאל מטורוטנט, ומרטין סיגל מאנגליה לכנס במרכז. בהצלחה לכולם!

This year, as in the three previous ones, the "Roim Rahok" (Seeing Far) sports event took place at the Center. Roim Rahok is a unique sports event featuring running races of 2, 5, and 10 kilometers as well as a 20-kilometer tandem bike race. Sportsmen and women from all over Israel attended the event, and enjoyed the lively spirit, drumming circle, tours of the kennels, and the lovely weather. The gala sports event took place thanks to the efforts of dozens of volunteers and workers from the Center, and we want to thank everyone for lending a helping hand and enabling it to take place! In other news,during the coming week the Center will host Martin Segal, Sara Gabriel, and Mike Leventhal, directors of the Friends' Organizations abroad in Great Britain, Toronto, and New York respectively, and the annual delegation of six blind graduates, their guide dogs, and escorts will visit Poland on a learning tour in commemoration of the Holocaust. This week there will also be a three-day evaluation course for three new candidates to receive guide dogs, and a new class of puppies will begin evaluation and training! Good luck to all! The following is a note from Max Fineman, who will be celebrating his Bar Mitzvan in December of this year. Max raised Flash, a guide dog puppy, who arrived in Israel this week to begin his training at the Center. Max raised Flash as a Bar Mitzvah project. Flash's mother is Shannon, a black Labrador who is raised by Jeff and Ellen Lambert of Long Island, New York. For my Mitzvah Project, I have selected the Israel Guide Dog Center for the Blind, an organization that combines my love of animals with my desire to help people, while supporting a project located in Israel. Let's meet "Flash." Flash has been donated from Guiding Eyes for the Blind in New York to the IGDCB. My family and I are honored and privileged to "puppy raise" Flash. Very few puppies have been raised in the USA and transported to Israel. Flash is the FIRST raised as part of a Bar Mitzvah Project. ! My family and I have been teaching Hebrew to Flash so that he can adjust to life in Israel when he makes Aliyah. I would like to give special thanks to those who have made my project possible: Jeff and Ellen Lambert, Noach and Orna Braun, Michael Leventhal, El-Al Airlines, Midway Jewish Center, and the amazing staff at the Mid Island Animal Hospital. השנה אנו מוסיפים שני מדריכים חדשים לצוות שלנו – הראשונה, הילה בן מאיר, מתחילה בימים אלו את הכשרתה כמאמנת כלבי נחייה ובשלב מאוחר יותר, כמדריכה לעיוורים בקורסים לקבלת כלב נחייה. הילה, בת 33, גרה באזור הרצליה ומגיעה מרקע של שילוב בעלי חיים וטיפול באנשים עם צרכים מיוחדים. הילה עבדה בעבר ככלבנית במעברי גבול בחברה אזרחית, והייתה מטפלת באנשים עם צרכים מיוחדים באמצעות רכיבה על סוסים. בין השאר היא טיפלה באנשים עם עיוורון, והחליטה להמשיך במקצוע של מדריכת עיוורים עם כלבי נחייה. הילה התחילה את העבודה שלה במרכז לפני כשבועיים, וכבר מרגישה מאד שייכת למטרה. "העבודה היא מדהימה. כולם מאד ממוקדים במטרה, וזה מאד מרגש," מציינת הילה. אנו מאחלים להילה הצלחה בעבודה שלה אצלנו ובהכשרה כמאמנת ומדריכה. באביב תכנס עוד עובדת חדשה שתצטרף גם היא לצוות המאמנים צילום: אלי בן-בוחר. This year we are adding two new trainers to our staff. The first to begin her apprenticeship as a guide dog trainer and instructor for blind clients is Hilla Ben Meir, who is beginning her work at the center. Hilla, 33, lives in the area of Herzliya and comes to us with experience as an animal trainer and therapist for people with special needs. Hilla has worked as a dog handler at border crossings for a civilian company. She has also worked as a therapist for blind persons and people with special needs as a horseback riding instructor. She has now decided to become a guide dog trainer and instructor of blind clients at the center learning to work with guide dogs. Hilla has been at the center for less than two weeks, but already feels very much at home. "The work is wonderful and amazing," she explains. "Everyone is very focused on the goals that the Center is trying to attain." We wish Hila success in her new job as a trainer and instructor at the Center! A Big Thank You to Our Workers from Shnat Sherut תודה גדולה לעובדות שנת שירות

This week we'll say thank you and goodbye to four women who have spent the past year working at the Center as "shin shinim" - shnat sherut" - a year of (public) service. רוח צפונית במרכז - כן ולא צפון מגיעים ליום הוכרה לתומכים Northern Wind Blows at the Center - Canvelo North Holds a Day for Supporters

Canvelo, the center's biking club, now has several daughter clubs throughout the country - Canvelo Sharon in the northern central region, and Canvelo North, which is situated in the area of Nahariya and the Western Galilee. This week Canvelo North welcomed sponsors, supporters, and volunteers who have supported the group since its founding in November, 2011 to a day of activities and tours of the center and the Canvelo biking facilities. Among the groups represented were Hogla-Kimberley, Milo'ot, Kivunim, and the Galgal Anak ("Big Wheel") biking club for persons with disabilities founded by members of Kibbutz Ramat Yohanan near Haifa. The day included an introductory exercise of walking blindfolded through the main building, a tour of the center's facilities and kennels, a quick visit to the two new nursing mothers Luli and Minty and their puppies, and a tour of the Canvelo facilities and bicycle trailer. Noach, Avital, and Moti Regiv spoke to the group about the center itself, the ideology of Canvelo, and the strong ties between the Center and the activities of the biking club. Nir Sheffer and Bracha Ben-Avraham, founders of the northern branch of Canvelo, expressed thanks to their guests for the help and support, and emphasized that the club is not just about biking, but about helping blindd and visually impaired persons to become involved in sports and integrating them into society. We want to thank everyone who attended the day, who have supported the northern chapter of Canvelo throughout the past three years, and enabled Canvelo to continue its important activities. (photos: NOach Braun) ל"כן ולא" – קבוצת הרכיבה של המרכז – יש מספר קבוצות בת ברחבי הארץ – כן ולא השרון, וכן ולא צפון, הממוקם בנהריה והגליל המערבי. השבוע כן ולא צפון קיבל את פניהם של תומכים, ספונסרים, ומתנדבים, שעזרו לקבוצה מאז הקמתה בנובמבר, 2011 ליום של סיור ופעילות במרכז הישראלי לכלבי נחייה. האורחים סיירו במרכז ובמתקני "כן ולא", בכלבייה, ואף ביקרו את שתי האמהות לולי ומינטי וגוריהן. בין הארגונים שהשתתפו ביום המיוחד היו קבוצת מילואות, "כיוונים", חברת חוגלה קימברלי, וחברי קיבוץ רמת יוחנן שהקימו קבוצת רכיבה לאנשים בעלי צרכים מיוחדים הנקראת "גלגל ענק". בין הפעילויות היו מפגש היכרות, הליכה בבניין בכיסוי עיניים, ושיחה עם נח, מוטי רגב, אביטל האחראית על שיווק במרכז על עבודת המרכז ועל הערכים של קבוצות "כן ולא". ניר שפר וברכה בן אברהם, שהקימו את קבוצת "כן ולא צפון" הודו לכל המשתתפים על תרומות לקבוצה ולהשתתפותם ביום המיוחד, והדגישו שמועדוני "כן ולא" הם לא רק מעודדים רכיבה על אופניים, אלא גם מאפשרים לעיוורים ולקויי ראייה להיות חלק מהחברה הרואה. בצילומים: הקבוצה צופה במדריך רועי שמדגים שיעור משמעת של כלבת נחייה בשם לייקה, ופעילות באולם ע"ש תמר פרקינס. Our Man in Oregon האיש שלנו באורגון

Yoav Ortov, an apprentice instructor at the Center, is presently undergoing a half year of training as a mobility instructor and guide dog trainer at the Guide Dogs for the Blind campus in Boring, Oregon. Yoav and his family are living in Portland, Oregon. He was warmly received by the school and things are going well. "I'm training four dogs that have now completed their fourth week of training," explains Yoav. "Last week the dogs were given an intermediate assessment, and all of them passed successfully." The dogs have four more weeks of training, tests, and another two weeks of additionao work before they complete their training. Yoav's trainees – two males and two females - are named Freddo, Meeko,Vimka, and Anlin. Meeko is a black Labrador retriever, and the other three are yellow Labs. Most of the training walks are conducted in the town of Gersham nearby, or in Portland. During his work Yoav is accompanied by Patrick, an experienced trainer. Yoav's dogs will be paired with blind clients in med December, and he will accompany them throughout the two-week instruction course on campus. Yoav is extremely impressed by the school and the organization. "The organization is extremely professional and well-organized, and I'm pleased to be here." We wish Yoav and his four dogs success in their work together!
יואב אורטוב, מדריך מתלמד שסיים בחודשים האחרונים את לימודיו כמאמן לכלבי נחייה בהמרכז, נמצא בחצי שנה של הכשרה כמאמן ומדריך בקמפוס של בית ספר של כלבי נחייה בעיירת בורינג במדינת אורגון בארה"ב. יואב ומשפחתו מתגוררים בפורטלנד, ויואב מסביר שהוא התקבל בחום בבית הספר, ושהלימודים שלו מתקדמים יפה. אני מאמן ארבעה כלבים שסיימו בערך מחצית מהאימונים שלהם," הסביר יואב. Puppy Play During Wartime משחקי גורים בזמן מלחמה

Everyone in Israel continues to live through these difficult days and to hope for an end to the violence in Gaza. As in any emergency situation, people with disabilities must cope with emergency measures and have to deal with difficulties. Those of us with guide dogs have been issued special instructions from the home front command, and many live in areas in the south that hae been under rocket attack. The blind and visually impaired children in the ELIYA kindergartens are also dealing with the situation, as are all the children in Israel. The staffs of the kindergartens are taking special measures to keep to the usual routine in order to keep the children as relaxed and calm as possible. Unfortunately the home front command has instructed the ELIYA kindergarten in Be'er Sheva to close, but the staff have been in constant contact with the children and their families. Many members of the staff have husbands and sons who have been called up or serving in the army, and they are doing their best to see the children through these difficult times. Children sleep in the protected area of the kindergarten in order to avoid waking them up during naptime. This photo of several puppy raisers in Be'er Sheva appeared on Faceboon yesterday. The students were at play with their puppies when they were interrupted by an alert, and took shelter in a stairwell, as instructed. As puppies tend to do - they continued their play.

כולנו בארץ ממשיכים להתמודד עם מצב חירום, במיוחד אלו שגרים באזור הדרום. עיוורים הנעזרים בכלבי נחייה קיבלו הנחיות מיוחדות לשהייה באזור מוגן עם כלבי נחייה, ורבים גרים באזור הדרום. ילדי גני אלי"ע מתמודדים עם המצב, כמו כל הילדים בארץ. לצערנו הגן בבאר שבע נסגר בגלל הוראות של פיקוד העורף, אבל הצוות ממשיך להיות בקשר הדוק עם הילדים והמשפחות. הילדים בגנים האחרים ממשיכים בשגרה כמה שאפשר כדי להוריד מתח ולהשאיר את הילדים רגועים. הילדים ישנים במרחב מוגן במנוחת הצרהים כדי למנוע צורך להעביר אותם במידה ותהייה אזעקהבתמונה רואים מספר סטודנטים שהם משפחות אמנות של גורי נחייה שלנו מבאר שבע ששחקו עם הכלבים שלהם. הם רצו לחדר מדרגות של בנין סמוך בשהייתה אזעקה, וכמובן, בדרכם של גורים, המשחק נמשך.

Rhonda, a Guide Dog Doing Her Job - and More רונדה כלבת נחייה עשתה את העבודה שלה ועוד יותר!

סיגלית היא נעזרת בכלבי נחייה מהמרכז הישראלי לכלבי נחייה שהיא קיבלה בחודש מרץ השנה. בנוסף לעיוורון, סיגלית גם מתמודדת עם לקות שמיעה. מצב זה היווה קושי מיוחד בזמן מבצע "צוק איתן" בו כל האוכלוסייה בדרום ובמרכז הארץ נאלץ להיות קשוב לאזעקות, המזהירות בפני התקפת טילים. סיגלית מספרת שכשנשמעה אזעקה כל המשפחה שלה רצה לחדר המדרגות, ובתחילה לא שמו לב שסיגלית לא איתם. סיגלית לא הייתה מודעת שיש אזעקה משום שהיא לא שמעה אותה, והביפר שיש לה לא עבד. כלבת הנחייה שלה, רונדה, לקחה יוזמה ורצה אליה, ומשכה אותה לחדר המדרגות, המקום הבטוח ביותר בבית. "כלבתי האהובה ראתה שאני לא מגיבה כמו בפעמים הקודמות, פשוט רצה לחדר ומשכה אותי לכיוון המדרגות. . דעו לכם גידלתם אלופה."

Sigalit received her guide dog Rhonda from the Israel Guide Dog Center for the Blind last March. In addition to being visually impaired, Sigalit also deals with a hearing disability. This situation presents particular difficulties during the present "Protective Edge" campaign, in which the entire population of the southern and central regions of Israel must respond quickly to sirens that warn of an impending rocket attack. Sigalit explained that when the siren sounded the entire family ran to the stairwell and at first were not aware that she was not with them. Sigalit was not aware that there was an alert because she did not hear it, and the beeper that she has that is supposed to issue a warning did not work. Rhonda, her guide dog, took initiative, ran to her, and pulled her towards the stairwell - the safest place in the house. Sigalit explained, "My beloved dog saw that I was not reacting like I had previously. She simply ran to my room and pulled me towards the stairwell. I want you to know that you have raised a champion!"

Barks and Booms - Coping with Rocket Attacks at the Center נביחות ופיצוצים - מתמודדים עם הטילים

שלום לכולם, מי שקורא את הבלוג בעברית לא זקוק להסבר עם מה שקורה באזור בית עובד ורחובות, וצוות המרכז מתמודד עם המצב. אנו מנסים לנהל את העבודה שלנו כשגרה, אך נאלצים לבטל ביקורים של קבוצות גדולות משום שאין מספיק מקום בממ"ד. ביום שישי שעבר קיימנו את האירוע החגיגי עם ילדי גן אלי"ע מפתח תקווה, ובו השתתפו ילדי הגן והמשפחות. המון משפחות התעניינו באפשרות של אימוץ כלב טיפולי - כלב שאיננו כלב נחייה, אלא ידיד וחבר לילד עיוור או כבד ראייה. המטרה שלנו היא שמשפחות אלו ישקלו את האפשרות של קבלת כלב נחייה בעתיד. אנו מקווים כולנו לימים שקטים יותר, ובינתיים, ממשיכים הלאה. בתמונה רואים את הצוות וכמה אורחים בממ"ד במרכז.

The Center is attempting to continue in our usual routine despite the rocket attacks. Last week we held a festive event at the Center for the children from the ELIYA kindergarten in Petach TIkva, and children and parents enjoyed a day of activities. The most important aspect of this event is that many families are now weighing the possibility of adopting a therapy dog - a dog that is not a guide dog, but a companion. Perhaps in the future these same families will consider a guide dog for their child when he or she is old enough to have one. We have had to cancel visits of large groups because of the small size of the bomb shelter in the building at the Center, but otherwise we continue on, and hope for quieter days soon! The pictures show the staff and a few guests in the bomb shelter during a rocket attack, and children from the ELIYA kindergarten in last week's event.

This Week at the Center - השבוע במרכז

למרות המצב הקשה באזור רחובות וראשון לציון, צוות המרכז מנסה להמשיך בשגרה. השבוע חברי צוות המרכז השתתפו ביום של דיונים בכנסת שהיו חלק מ"יום העיוור" – יום של הזדהות והגברת מודעות לציבור העיוורים ולקויי ראייה בארץ. חברי הצוות השתתפו בדיונים בועדות בכנסת, וכ-12 בוגרי המרכז ובעלי תפקידים השתתפו באירועי היום. נתנאל, מדריך ומאמן של המרכז, הגיע עם כלב נחייה בשם לאקי, ומספר חברי כנסת ואנשים לקויי ראייה התנסו בניווט דרך מסלול מכשולים שהוקם במקום. הגיעו לאירוע מספר משפחות אונה עם הלכיבם. רפי טגליכט, מנהל תכנון ציין ש: "הנוכחות שלנו באירוע הוסיפה הרבה חגיגיות וצבע. למרות ההשקעה המשמעותית שנעשתה באירוע, היה כדאי." השבוע גם נשמעו קולות של ילדים צעירים – ילדי גם אלי"ע מפתח תקווה, שחגגו את סוף השנה שלהם במרכז. הילדים העיוורים ולקויי ראייה כבר מתרגלים לכלבים, ואולי יום אחד, כשיגדלו, הם ומשפחותיהם יחליטו לאמץ כלב נחייה.

Despite the difficult situation in the area of Rehovot and Rishon Letzion, the staff of the Center has attempted to continue work as usual. This week members of the IGDCB staff took part in a day of discussions in the Knesset that were part of the activities surrounding "Bind Day" – June 6th, a day designated for raising public awareness of the needs and rights of blind and visually impaired Israelis. Members of the IGDCB staff took part in various discussions in several Knesset committees together with a dozen graduates of the Center who attended the event. Netanel was present with a guide dog and le various Knesset members and several visually impaired persons through an obstacle course that was set up on site, and several puppy raisers were also present. Rafi Taglicht, Director of Planning at the Center, noted that "Our presence at the event added a lot of festivity and color. Despite the significant efforts that were invested in the event, it was well worthwhile." This week also marked the festive end of the year party for the children of the ELIYA kindergarten in Petach Tikva. These children are getting used to being around cuddly friendly dogs, and perhaps one day they, and their families, will decide to acquire a guide dog. _______________________________________________________________________________

ושוב - כלבת נחייה מהמרכז שוב נוסעת לאיים הבריטיים Once Again a Guide Dog from the Center Enters the UK

The elimination of the quarantine laws in Great Britain in January 2012 made it possible for blind and visually impaired people to enter the UK with their guide dogs for the first time. In February 2012 Dinka, my guide dog, and I entered the UK and were proud to be the first guide dog partnership to do so under the new travel scheme. This year in June Dennis Allon and I were invited back again for a week of raising awareness and fundraising for the Center among schools, synagogues, and members of the Board of Trustees of the British Friends of the IGDCB. We were proud to visit London again and to represent the Center! Getting Dinka into the UK still required a great deal of paperwork, but in the end we received a letter of approval from the Heathrow Animal Reception Centre, and were greeted at the exit from the jetway by a young woman from the reception center, who called DInka by name, checked her microchip, and produced a letter permitting us to enter the UK! DInka received this with tail wagging, and we were greeted by Martin Segal, the new chairman of the British Friends, and Jess Green, who works with Martin for the British Friends in boosting the center at London schools and synagogues. HIghlights of the week included an evening with M.P. David Blunkett and hs guide dog Crosby. Mr. Blunkett and I fielded questions from the audience while DInka and Crosby carried on their own dialogue under the table. (See photo The evening was also attended by our wonderful friend Rabbi Jonathan Wittenberg and his dog Mitzpeh. Dinka and I also participated in the Maccabbi Fun Run, a sports event for numerous London Jewish charities. DInka behaved beautifully throughout the visit, and was undaunted by traffic moving the "wrong" way, but she did hesitate and barked at a person dressed in a lion costume at the Fun Run. One must remember that guide dogs have an amazing ability to adjust to difficult situations such as long plane rides and different surroundings, but underneath it all, they are, after all, dogs!

הסרת חוקי ההסגר בבריטניה בינואר 2012 אפשר לעיוורים ולקויי ראייה להיכנס לאיים הבריטיים בפעם הראשונה עם כלבי נחייה. בפברואר, 2013 דינקה, כלבת הנחייה שלי נכנסה יחד איתי לאנגליה, והיינו גאים מאד לייצג את המרכז ולהיות הצמד הראשון להיכנס לאיים הבריטיים מישראל. השנה בחודש יוני דניס אלון ואני הוזמנו שוב לנסוע ללונדון לצורך הגברת מודעות וגיוס משאבים בקרב בתי ספר יהודיים, בתי כנסת, וחברי ההנהלה של ארגון הידידים של המרכז הישראלי לכלבי נחייה בלונדון. לא היה פשוט להיכנס עם דינקה ללונדון. הכנסת כלב נחייה עדיין דורשת המון ניירת, אבל בסופו של דבר דינקה ואני הלקבלנו בשדה התעופה היטרו על ידי אישה מרשות שדה התעופה האחראית על קבלת בעלי חיים. היא חיכתה לנו בפתח השער, קראה לדינקה בשם, בדקה את השבב שלה, והנפיקה לנו מכתב אישור כניסה לאיים הבריטיים. דינקה קיבלה את הכל בקישקוש בזנב, ולאחר מכן קיבלו את פנינו מרטין סיגל, המנהל החדש של ארגון הידידים בבריטניה, וג'ס גרין, השותפה שלו שעוזרת לו ביצירת קשרים עם בתי הספר ובתי הכנסת בקרב הקהילה היהודית. בין האירועים של השבוע היו ערב בו נפגשנו עם חבר הפרלמנט דייויד בלאנקט וקרוסבי, כלב הנחייה שלו וידידנו הטוב, הרב יונתן וויטנברג וכלבו מצפה. Another batch of puppies returned to the Center last Friday to begin their evaluation and training to be future guide dogs. Through all the pain and longing, I'm comforted by the fact that I left him happily romping with his siblings, and there is no place that will take better care of him. I guess it will take some time before the lump in my throat disappears, and I will no longer consider bringing plastic bottles back for Mango to tear apart. Building a Bridge of Light for Visually IMpaired Children בניית "גשר של אור" לילדים עם לקות ראייה

Last week representatives from the Center and volunteers took part in an exciting event known as "The Bridge of Light." This annual event takes place in the Safari Park in Ramat Gan, and is a celebration for Bar and Bat Mitzvah houths who are visually impaired, or children of visually impaired parents. The event offers us a wonderful opportunity to strengthen contacts with other relevant organizations, expose blind and visually impaired children and their families to guide dogs, and to locate and establish ties with future potential clients. Participants in the event had the opportunity to ride tandem bicycles with volunteers from Canvelo, and to experience walking with the "dog sim" – a device that simulates walking with a real guide dog. Our booth at "The Bridge of Light" attracted much attention, and the cooperation with volunteers from Canvelo made for a day that was worthwhile for everyone. The most significant aspect of the day was that real potential clients took an interest in acquiring a guide dog in the future. We'e also like to note that this week Yoav received his certificate as a licensed guide dog trainer. Yoav leaves for six months of training in Oregon where he will be responsible for training two classes of guide dogs. We wish Yoav hearty congratulations and success in his next stage of training! בשבוע שעבר לקחנו חלק באירוע מרגש שנקרא גשר של אור. אירוע זה מתקיים כל שנה ובו חוגגים בספארי, בת/ בר מצווה לילדים עיוורים או לילדים להורים עיוורים. אירוע מסוג זה הוא הזדמנות לחיזוק והידוק קשרים עם ארגונים אחרים, ולחשוף ילדים ומשפחותיהם לכלבי נחיה ואיתור נעזרים פוטנצאליים. בנוסף אלינו קבוצת כן ולא אפשרה התנסות ברכיבה על אופני טנדם וכהמשך ישיר הפנו אלינו להתנסות בהליכה עם דוגסים. הדוכן שלנו פעל מצויין, זכינו להרבה תשומת לב, הנוכחות שלנו הייתה מורגשת והשיתוף פעולה עם כן ולא נשא פרי. השגנו את שתי המטרות שלשמן הגענו, כאשר ההישג המשמעותי והמיידי ביותר היה מספר אנשים עיוורים שהתעניינו, ויחד ננסה לברר את נושא כלבי הנחיה לגביהם. תודה לכל מי שתרום להצלחת הדוכן שלנו! בהזדמנות זאת, אנו רוצים לאחל הצלחה גדולה ליואב, שקיבל השבוע תעודה כמאמן מוסמך לכלבי נחייה. יואב עוזב אותנו לתקופת הכשרה במדינת אורגון בארה"ב, שם יעבור חצי שנה המאמן של שני מחזורים של כלבי נחייה. אנו מאחלים ליואב המון הצלחה בהמשך ההכשרה שלו! בתמונות רואים משתתפים באירוע "גשר של אור" המתנסים ברכיבה על אופני טנדם, ואת יואב הגאה מחזיק את התעודה שלו יחד עם המחנך שלו רועי (שמאל) ונח (ימין). --

Graduation Day - Parting and Pleasure סיום קורס - פרידה מעורבת בשמחה

כן ולא רוכבים שוב - והפעם - בולגריה Canvelo Rides Again - this time Bulgaria

בכל שנה קבוצת הרכיבה "כן ולא" - קבוצת הרכיבה לרואים ועיוורים של המרכז לכלבי נחייה, יוצאת למסע רכיבה באירופה. קרא יותר ביום שישי ה 16 למאי יצאה קבוצה של 30 רוכבים לבולגריה, שרכבו על 11 זוגות טנדם ו-7 זוגות של אופני סינגל. מתוך הרוכבים יצאו 8 אנשים עם עיוורון, כאשר עבור חלק מהם זה היה המסע הראשון מחוץ לגבולות הארץ. המסע הזה היה המסע הרביעי של הקבוצה בחו"ל, כאשר קדמו לו מסעות לשוויץ, אוסטריה ורומניה. הרכיבה התנהלה ברובו לאורך רכס הרי הרילה. הקבוצה ביקרה במספר כפרים וישובים וסיימה את המסע בביקור בסופיה. מסלול הרכיבה היה הררי ברובו תוך שהוא חוצה נחלים, גשרים, איים של שלג ומישורים ירוקים. רובו ככולו טובל בנופים שאינם מוכרים בארץ. בסך הכל רכבה הקבוצה כ 180 ק"מ של מסלול שטח מאתגר בחמישה ימי רכיבה.

This is the fourth year in which "Canvelo" – the Center's tandem biking club for blind and sighted riders, has gone on a biking tour in a country in Europe. On May 16th 30 bikers set out for the Rila Mountains of Bulgaria. The group consisted of 30 riders – 8 of whom are blind or visually impaired, who rode in a cavalcade of 11 tandem bikes and 7 singles. For many of the riders, this was the first time they had undertaken a biking expedition outside Israel. This year's trip was preceded by trips to Romania, Austria in 2013 and a trip to Switzerland. Most of this year's trip took place along the ridge of the Rila Mountains. The group visited villages and settlements, and ended the ride in Sofia. The group rode over green meadows, rivers, bridges, and through snow-covered areas – a rugged ride of over 180 kilometers over a period of five days!

Our Representatives in the Land of the Rising Sun נציגינו בארץ השמש העולה

השבוע רפי טגליכט, מנהל תכנון ופיתוח, ואורנה בראון, מנהלת הכלבייה ומשפחות אומנה, חזרו מהכנס של הפדרציה הבינלאומית לכלבי נחייה שהתקיים ביפן. המרכז הישראלי לכלבי נחייה הוא החבר היחיד באזור מזרח התיכון שהוא חבר בפדרציה. הנסיעה פתחה הזדמנות ללמוד, ליצור קשרים עם אנשים מחו"ל, ולקבל רעיונות חדשים להכשרה, העברת מידע לחניכים, ועוד. בתמונה רואים את רפי ואורנה עם הזוג שרון ואריק לורי, שתרמו לנו את איימי, כלבת הרבייה עליה קראתם לפני שבוע.

One week ago Rafi Taglicht, head of planning and development at the Center, and Orna Braun, manager of the kennels and puppy raisers, returned from the Conference of the International Guide Dog Federation. The IGDCB is the only member of the Federation in the Middle East. Rafi and Orna felt the conference offered an excellent opportunity to establish ties with other guide dog schools abroad, learn new ideas about instruction and distributing information to guide dog users, as well as many other issues. The picture shows Rafi and Orna together with Eric and Sharon Loori, who donated Amy, the puppy whom you read about last week, who will be a breeding dog at the Center.

A Big Thank You to our Volunteers! !תודה גדולה למתנדבים שלנו

בערב יום ראשון שעבר חברי צוות המרכז, בוגרים ומשפחותיהם, ומתנדבים התכנסו בגן האירועים נחלה הסמוך למרכז לערב מיוחד. 220 אנשים ישבו תחת עצי הפקאן הגבוהים ליד הבריכה בשביל ערב שכולו ערב הוכרה למתנדבים שלנו. המשתתפים נהינו מארוחת ערב והופעת סטנד-אף של בלהה, אמו של המאמן הראשי עמי תורן. ההופעה, שהייתה "נגישה לעיוורים" – נעשתה בחושך מוחלט ללא תאורה. נח בראון, מנכ"ל ומייסד המרכז, ציין שלא היינו יכולים להשיג את מה שהישגנו בלי המתנדבים שלנו. שגית קירסון, אחראית על המתנדבים, הודתה למתנדבים, שעוזרים לנו בכל חלקי העבודה במרכז – מעבודה משרדית, טיפול בחניכים בזמן קורסים, טיפול בכלבים, והעשרת הערבים בקורס עם פעילויות. פנינה דיק, שהקימה ומנהלת את קבוצת ספינות הדרקון, סיפרה על ההישגים של הקבוצה בתחרויות האחרונות. השבוע האחרון הוא דוגמה בולטת של התרומות הרבות של המתנדבים. לפני שבוע התחיל קורס מאי לקבלת כלבי נחייה, בו משתתפים שישה חניכים. עד כה חברי הקורס נהינו מערב אפייה, מלאכת יד, שיחה עם עובדת סוציאלית, ורכיבה על אופני טנדם. אין ספק שלא יכולנו להשיג את מה שהישגנו – ללא עזרת המתנדבים שלנו! אנו רוצים להגיד לכל אחד ואחת מהם תודה, ומקווים שתמשיכו להיות איתנו!
Last Sunday evening the staff, volunteers, and graduates of the IGDCB congregated at the nearby Nachala events garden for a special evening. 220 people lounged under the tall leafy pecan trees near the pool in an evening dedicated to our volunteers. After dinner the guests were entertained with a standup routine performed by Bilha, the mother of head dog trainer Ami Toren. The routine was performed in total darkness with no lighting and was enjoyed by all. Noach, CEO and founder of the Center, Sagit Kirson, director of the volunteers, and other staff members spoke about the valuable contribution that the volunteers make towards achieving the goals of the Center. Pnina Dik, who established and runs the dragon boating team, spoke about the team's accomplishments in recent competitions, giving everyone a prime example of what our volunteers have helped accomplish. The past week has been a prime example of the many contributions that volunteers make to the Center. A new course with six students is presently underway, and no day goes past without volunteers helping the students feel at home. Each evening after dinner (at which volunteers help to prepare and serve) another activity takes place – crafts, baking, a discussion with a social worker, and during the day volunteers arrived to take students on a tandem bike ride. We truly could not do what we do without our volunteers!

!Amy Makes Aliya איימי עולה ארצה!

לפני שבועיים ירדה נוסעת מיוחדת במינה מטיסת אל על מארצות הברית. היא הייתה שחורה, עם ארבע רגליים, וזנב, והיא התקבלה כאן בקבלת פנים נלהבת בנמל תעופה בן גוריון. משם היא עשתה את דרכה למרכז הישראלי לכלבי נחייה. שמה של העולה החדשה המיוחדת הזאת היא איימי, והיא גורה שתשמש ככלבת רבייה. קיבלנו את איימי בתרומה מאריק ושרון לורי מ – Freedom Guide Dogs בקסוויל, ניו יורק< אחרי פרסום הבקשה למצוא מלווה שיביא את הגורה, התקבלו עשרות פניות של אנשים טובי לב, המוכנים לקחת אחראיות להביא את איימי לארץ. עכשיו היא הגיע בשלום, ומסתגלת לסביבה החדשה. איימי כבר לומדת עברית ואנו גאים לקבל אותה אצלנו. אנו מקווים שהיא תהיה אמא גאה של הרבה כלבי נחייה בעתיד! בתמונות רואים את איימי כגורה קטנה, ואיימי היום עם נח בביתה החדש. Two weeks ago a very special passenger disembarked from an El Al flight from the United States. She was completely black, and had four legs and a tail, and she received a warm welcome at Ben Gurion Airport. From there she made her way to the Israel Guide Dog Center for the Blind, which would be her new home. The name of this very special new immigrant is Amy, and she will be a breeding dog. Amy was donated by Eric and Sharon Loori, Directors and Founders of Freedom Guide Dogs in Cassville, New York. After the American Friends publicized an appeal for volunteers to escort Amy on the flight, dozens of kindhearted people volunteered to take this small immigrant to Israel. She arrived safely, and is now getting used to her new environment. Amy is already learning Hebrew and we are proud to have her with us. We hope she will be the proud mother of many guide dogs in the future! פרידה מדושקה, גור נחייה Saying Goodbye to Dushka, a Guide Dog Puppy

לדושקה שלנו! נשמה כל כך טובה שאי אפשר להסביר, פשוט מכניס אושר לחיים. אני כבר מבין שזה נגמר (לקח הרבה זמן) ועכשיו זה הזמן לומר שלום היה לנו את הכבוד לגדל כלב שבשבילנו הוא משפחה שלמה והוא הכי מושלם שיש, למרות הצליעה ברגל שפסלה אותו מלהיות כלב נחייה, ... אבל זה כל כך ברור שהכלב הזה יתרום כל כך הרבה לא משנה איפה שהוא יהיה. השבוע קיבלנו הודעה שהוא אומץ על ידי משפחה שיש להם ילד קטן עם גידול במוח. אני מבין שהמטרה העיקרית זה להכניס שמחה לחיים של אותו ילד ואני בטוח במיליון אחוז שהילד הזה יהיה מאושר אתו. אני שמח שלד הגיע לידיים טובות וזה מאפשר לי לשחרר ולהמשיך הלאה. אני אבא גאה עם מלא געגועים מאחל לך הצלחה. אוהבים אותך והנה כמה תמונות שיישארו אתנו תמיד דוראל כלבי נחייה באר שבע https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KjrTwBsFUY To our Dushka! I understand that the objective is to give this child some happiness in his life, and I'm sure that he will be happy with him. I'm happy that he is in good hands, and that enables me to go on. Staff Fun Day in Tel Aviv יום הגיבוש של הצוות בתל אביב

מדי פעם צוות המרכז חייב לקחת הספקה מהעבודה הרצינית והחשובה שלנו. זה מה שקרה ביום שלישי השבוע, כשכל חברי הצוות יצאו ליום גיבוש בתל אביב. המרכז נשאר ריק, חוץ מכמה מתנדבים שטיפלו בכלבים, וכולם עלו על אוטובוס לעיר שאין בה הפסקה. התחלנו את היום בארוחת בוקר ב"דר' שקשוקה, ומשם המשכנו ברגל עד לתחנת הסג'וואי בנמל. מלבד נפילה אחת או שתים, כולם נהנו, והמשכנו באוטובוס לאזור המוזיאון של תל אביב הישנה בבנין "מגדל שלום". נדדנו בין פנס הרחוב העברי הראשון, מוזאיקה ענקית של נוף תל אביב הישנה, צילומים של בנייני הבאוהאוס ופסלי שעווה של ביאליק, גולדה מאיר, ואלכסנדר פן. משם המשכנו בטיול בשדרות רוטשילד בו שחזרנו את הימים הטובים של קום המדינה. בית הכנסת המדהים בו התחתן אלי כהן ז"ל, וחתמנו את היום בארוחה דשנה במסעדת גושן וחזרנו הביתה, מחכים ליום הגיבוש בשנה הבאה. נאחל הצלחה גדולה לרפי ואורנה, היוצרים לכנס הבינלאומי של הפדרציה לכלבי נחייה, וליואב, היוצא למדינת אורגון לצורך הכשרה נוספת!.

Once in a while the staff of the Center has to take a break from our serious and important work. On Tuesday the Center was left unmanned except for a few volunteers to care for the dogs, and the staff set out on a bus to enjoy a fun day in Tel Aviv, the city that never stops. We began with breakfast at Dr. Shakshuka, and then continued to the Segway station, where everyone began rolling down the promenade on Jaffa. Except for a couple of falls, the tour was enjoyed by all. We then continued on to the Museum of the Old City of Tel Aviv in the Migdal Shalom, where we wandered through past the first lamppost, the huge mosaic depicting the old city of Tel Aviv, photographs of the famous Bauhaus buildings, and wax statues of Bialik, Golda Meir, and Alexander Penn. Our guide then led us down Rothschild Blvd, where we visited important sites from the days of the establishment of the State of Israel, the magnificent synagogue where Eli Cohen Z"L was married, and ended the day with a fine meal at the Goshen Restaurant. Everyone returned home, tired but happy. We wish the best of luck to Rafi and Orna who are setting out for Japan to attend the International Conference of the Guide Dog Schools Federation, and to Yoav who is off to receive additional training in Oregon.

Riding During the Pesach Holiday

During the Passover Holiday all three Canvelo Biking Clubs set out on excursions in various parts of the country. The Central club traveled to the far north and Upper Galilee, the Western Galilee club rode along the new railway line in the Jordan Valley and Beit Sean, and the Sharon Club rode in the same area. Hundreds of people encountered the tandem bike riders winding their way along the roads and paths - excellent exposure for our work! The following photo is of the Northern Club during the "Hogla Kimberley Ride" on the bridge spanning what will soon be the new railway from Haifa to Afula.

במשך חול המועד פסח כל שלושת קבוצות "כן ולא" יצאו למסעות ברחבי הארץ. קבוצת המרכז נסעה לגליל העליון, וקבוצות הצפון והשרון נסעו לאזור עמק הירדן. מאות אנשים הנופשים בפארקים ובחיק הטבע פגשו את רוכבי הטנדמים - חשיפה נהדרת למרכז ולעבודה שלנו! בתמוחנה רואים את הקבוצה הצפונית ברכיבת "חוגלה קימברלי" על אחד מהגשרים של פסי הרכבת שיובילו מחיפה לעפולה שעכשיו בבנייה.

International Guide Dog Day יום כלב הנחייה הבינלאומי

השנה כמו בכל שנה "צמד" עמותת העיוורים הנעזרים בכלבי נחייה ארגן חגיגה ססגונית ומרהיבה לציון יום כלב הנחייה הבינלאומי. השנה החגיגה התקיימה בבסיס פלמחים, שהוא קרוב למרכז הישראלי לכלבי נחייה, וכבר מקיים מערכת יחסים של שיתוף פעולה. החגיגה התחילה בהתכנסות ברחבה מול האולם, שם הייתה תערוכת כלי טיס של חייל האוויר. מי שלא רואה היה יכול לגשת לכלים המדהימים ולגעת בהם לאחר מכן התכנסנו לאולם למופע מוסיקלי של להקת חיל האוויר עם נילי זיידל, שהיא מוסיקאית וזמרת הנעזרת בכלבת נחייה. הקהל שמע דברי ברכה מנח בראון, מייסל ומנכ"ל של המרכז, גיא שמחי, יו"ר המרכז לעיוור, רפי כהן, יו"ר "צמד" ואנשים אחרים. היה מדהים לראות קרוב ל-50 כלבי נחייה באולם - היושבים בשקט ומאזינים למופע יחד עם בעליהם. הרבה חברי צוות של המרכז היו נוכחים באירוע. להתראות בשנה הבאה! .

This year, as every year, "Tzemed" - the Israel Guide Dog Users' Association, held a colorful and gala event to mark International Guide Dog Day. This year's event was held at the Palmachim Air Force Base, which is located close to the Israel Guide Dog Center for the Blind and has been working in cooperation with the center in many activities. The event began with a gathering outside the auditorium, and soldiers guided everyone through an exhibit of small unmanned aircraft and other sophisticated equipment. Those who were unable to see were able to approach the aircraft and touch them as the soldiers offered explanations. Everyone then entered the auditorium for a festive performance of the Air Force musical ensemble joined by Nili Zeidel, a singer and musician who is also a guide dog user. Speeches followed by Noach Braun, founder and director of the Center, Guy Simchi, Chairman of the Israel Center for the Blind, Rafi Cohn, Chairman of the Israel Guide Dog Users' Association, and others. And, of course, the audience also consisted of close to 50 guide dogs, who sat quietly and attentively throughout the entire ceremony. The event was attended by many of the members of the staff of the Center. The photos show a small segment of the audience - people and dogs - and the air force exhibit.

Rowing Together!

There is nothing like organized integrated sports activities to help blind and visually impaired persons be a part of a team, get out and see the country, meet people, and of course, keep fit. The Center sponsors the Canvelo biking club as well as the dragon-boat rowing team, . News has just come in that the Canvelo team placed 2nd out 11 teams in today's competition! The team, comprised of blind and sighted rowers, has practiced synchronizing their rowing efforts and teamwork and deserves the honors they received in today's competition! The team uses a drum to synchronize the rowers and keeping the boat going is a true expression of teamwork. The photo shows the Canvelo dragon-boats in the first heat of the race.

Three Dogs and Three Chairmen שלושה כלבים ושלושה יושבי ראש

שלושה כלבים, ושלושה יושבי ראש! Who could have imagined that three dogs from the same litter: Jack, Joy, and George (all beginning with the letter "gimel" in Hebrew) would all be paired with three people who have become chairmen of three organizations for the blind in Israel? Here's how it happened: Joy, Jack, and George are three yellow Labradors who were paired with three people during November and December of 2012. Joy is Amos Be'er's first guide dog. Amos, who lives in Jerusalem, is chairman of the Library for the Blind, Visually Impaired, and Handicapped in Netanya. Jack is Guy Simchi's second guide dog. Guy lives in Ganei Tikva, a suburb of Tel Aviv, and has been serving for the past two years as chairman of the Center for the Blind in Israel. Guy received Jack in December of 2012 when he retired his first guide dog Turner, a black Labrador. Rafi Cohn lives in Kfar Veradim, a town in the Western Galilee. Rafi has had numerous guide dogs, and his latest dog George took over when his previous dog Larry was retired. Larry now lives with Rafi's family as a pet, and Rafi was elected chairman of "Tzemed", the Israel Guide Dog Users' Association, last October. We wish all three chairmen and all three dogs good luck in their work together! מי היה חושב ששלושה כלבים מאותו השגר – ג'ק, ג'ורג', וג'וי, ייצמדו לשלושה אנשים שכל אחד מהם יהיה יושב ראש של ארגון חשוב לעיוורים? כך קרה. ג'וי, ג'ורג', וג'ק הם שלושה כלבי לברדור בהירים. הם נמסרו לבעליהם בחודשי נובמבר – דצמבר 2012. ג'וי היא כלבתו של עמוס באר מירושלים. עמוס מכהן כיושב ראש של הספרייה המרכזית לעיוורים בנתניה. ג'וי היא כלבת הנחייה הראשון של עמוס, והוא קיבל אותה בקורס באוקטובר 2012. ג'ק הוא כלבו של גיא שמחי המתגורר בגני תקווה ומכהן כיושב ראש של המרכז לעיוור. ג'ק הוא כלבו השני של גיא, והחליף את כלבו טרנר שיצא לפנסיה. ג'ורג' הוא כלבו של רפי כהן, המתגורר בכפר ורדים. לרפי היו כבר הרבה כלבים, וג'ורג' החליף את כלבו לארי, שיצא לפנסיה ועדיין מתגורר עם המשפחה ככלב מחמד. רפי נבחר בחודש אוקטובר שעבר כיושב ראש החדש של "צמד" – עמותת הנעזרים לכלבי נחייה. אנו מאחלים לשלושת הכלבים ולשלושת יושבי הראש הצלחה רבה בתפקידיהם!

Happy Purim Bow Wow!! חג פורים שמח הב הב!

פעם בשנה אנו משתוללים, משתגעים, ושוכחים את הכל - בפורים! כך היה במסיבה במרכז! תודה לאלי בנבוחר על התמונות! Once each year we forget everything and just have fun! Such was the case at the Purim party at the Center! Thanks to Eli Ben Bocher for the photos!

Specialist in Animal Behavior and the Clicker Method Kathy Sdao Visits the Center

This week the training and instruction staff at the Center hosted Kathy Sdao and a delegation of three other trainers from Marker Training. During the visit the guests had lunch at the center and then toured the campus, where they experienced a walk with the guide dog simulator and real guide dogs. Kathy is a specialist in Animal Behavior Problems/Clicker Technique. She is an enthusiastic advocator of clicker training, which she has demonstrated has awesome power to communicate clearly with many species of mammals, both land and aquatic. The day after Kathy's visit at IGDCB four of our training staff attended Kathy's clicker training workshop in Tel Aviv-Yafo. After her visit Kathy wrote: Dear Rafi, Ah, thanks to you and your colleagues for your warm welcome and eager participation in the seminar! I love the photos you shared. Looking through them reminds me how much I enjoyed the tour of your facility –- a true high-point of my trip. In fact, today I wore my Israel Guide Dog Center sweatshirt and told several friends all about my visit and the smart and dedicated trainers I met there. השבוע צוות המאמנים במרכז אירחו את קאתי סאדאו, - מומחית בהתנהגות בעלי חיים ובטכניקת הקליקר. במשך 20 השנים האחרונות היא עבדה כמאלפת מקצועית ומטפלת בבעיות התנהגות של כלבים ויונקים שונים. היא מומחית בתחום התנהגות בעלי חיים, בעיות התנהגות, ובשיטת הקליקר. במשך הביקור במרכז קאתי ושלושת המאמנים שהגיעו יחד איתה התארחו בארוחת צהרים וסיירו במרכז. קאתי התנסתה בהליכה מדומה (הליכת רתמה) ובהליכה עם כלב נחייה. בתום הביקור קאתי כתבה: שלום רפי, תודה לך ולעמיתים שלך לקבלת הפנים החמה, ולהשתתפותכם הנלהבת בסדנה! אני מאד אוהבת את התמונות שפרסמת. כשאני מסתכלת בהן, אני נזכרת עד כמה ניהניתי מהסיור במרכז – שהיה אחת הנקודות השיא של הנסיעה שלי. היום לבשתי את הטריינינג של המרכז וסיפרתי לחברים שלי על הביקור שלי אצלכם, ועל המאמנים המסורים והחכמים שפגשתי שם. יש לי תחושה שכולנו ניפגש שוב, ואני כבר מחכה לזה. דרישת שלום חמה, קאתי

Dona's Important Job התפקיד החשוב של דונה

Many of the dogs who don't qualify as guide dogs are given to families with children who have special needs. Even though they are not able to qualify as guide dogs, they are, nevertheless, valuable and intelligent dogs, who are extremely responsive to human needs. Dona is one of these dogs. She was adopted by the Madmoni family from Yokne'am Elite whose daughter Tomm has CP as well as a visual disability. Here is their moving and exciting letter: Last month we adopted Dona, a guide dog that was raised at the Center. Since then there has been an amazing positive change in our home. A wonderful lovely animal has entered our lives, and has swept all of us off our feet. Everyone chips in to care for her and clean her, to feed her and play with her. Dona entertains us and makes us laugh. The girls take her out for walks and brush her fur. They have shown commitment and responsibility towards her. I am so thrilled with the process, and want to share it with you. Thanks from all of us! Alpha Romeo and Guide Dogs - Forward! Go!

אולי תשאלו: מה משותף בין מכונית אלפא רומאו ובין כלבי נחייה? ביום שבת מצאו את התשובה קבוצה של 100 ילדים ומבוגרים, שהם חברי מועדון אלפא רומאו שבאו לבקר במרכז. תימורה ארגנה את האירוע כולו, שכלל צפייה בסרט על המרכז וסיור בכלבייה ובקמפוס. הקבוצה יכלה לחוות את החוויה של הליכה על כלב נחייה באמצעות מכשיר ה"דוג סים" שהו סימולטור דומה לרתמה של כלב נחייה כאשר אדם רואה מוביל אדם אחר עם כיסוי עיניים, כאשר הוא אוחז בידית. הפעילות כללה גם סימולטור של נהיגה ופעילויות לילדים, וכולם נהינו מהמפגש עם הכלבים. אז....קדימה, סע!

You might ask: what do guide dogs have to do with Alpha Romeo? A group of 100 children and adults from the Alpha Romeo Auto Club found out last Saturday when they visited the Center. The visit was organized by Timora who is responsible for the kennels. The visit began with a film about the Center, and the visitors were then able to experience what it is like to walk with a guide dog by trying the "Dog Sim" – a device in which a sighted person leads a blindfolded person while they hold the handle of the "Dog Sim". The visit also included children's activities and a driving simulator. So….Forward! Go!

Or-El and Sue on the Job

When you walk into the entrance to the main building at the Israel Guide DOg Center for the blind, the first thing you see is the large window of the reception desk. The young woman sitting behind the window who answers phone calls, receives visitors, and does many other tasks is Or-El, who is doing a year of service at the center. But if you enter Or-El sits and works, you'll see that Or-El is not alone. Sue is there, too. Sue is a three-month-old white Labrador puppy. At this point she does little to help Or-El on the job, sincew she is usually sleeping on her little blue rug. But when approached, she quickly gets to her feet, wobbles over to explore, sniff, lick, and chew fingers with her tiny puppy teeth! Or-El is Sue's puppy raiser. She received Sue in mid-December, and has been devoting her days (and nights) to caring for Sue, giving her the love and attention she needs, and teaching her to walk on a leash. Sue can be held in your arms, but that won't be for long, as she is growing rapidly, as Labrador puppies do, and she will soon outgrow her tiny blue "Guide Dog in "Training" coat. Or-El, her sister Bat-El, who also contributed a year of service at the Center, and their family have previously raised two other guide dog puppies - Shannon and Maxi. Sue is the first puppy for whom Or-El is solely responsible. And no doubt that as she grows she will spend a lot less time sleeping and will be far more active in receiving guests at the Center from her spot behind the reception desk. She is a fine representative of the many puppies who are now with their adoptive families who will be our future guide dogs! Or-El says that raising Sue is a big job, but rewarding. The most challenging thing is to offer Sue the attention she needs, and to keep up with the many tasks of socializing a young puppy who is destined to become a guide dog. So good luck to Or-El and Sue in the next year together! כשנכנסים לבניין הראשי במרכז לכלבי נחייה לעיוורים, הדבר הראשון שרואים הוא החלון הגדול שנפתח אל דוכן הקבלה. האישר הצעירה שיושבת בדוחן ועונה לטלפונים, עושה עבודה משרדית, והרבה מטלות אחרות היא אור-אל, שתורמת שנת שירות במרכז. אבל אם נכנסים מאחורי הדלפק, רואים שאור-אל לא יושבת לבד. סו נמצאת שם, גם כן. סו היא גורת לברדור רטרייבר לבנה בת שלושה חודשים. בשלב זה היא עוזרת לאור-אל מעט מאד, משום שהיא ישנה רב הזמן על המיטה הכחולה הקטנה שלה. אבל כשמתקרבים אליה היא מיד מתעוררת, מתקרבת, ובודקת מי הגיע, מלקקת, ואפילו נותנת ביסים קטנים לאצבעות עם השיניים הקטנטנות שלה! אור-אל היא המשפחה האומנת של סו, והיא קיבלה אותה בחודש דצמבר. מאז היא מקדישה את ימיה (וגם לילותיה!) לטיפול בסו, הקדשת תשומת הלב והאהבה שהיא זקוקה לכם, וללמד אותה ללכת על רצועה. כעת ניתן להחזיק את סו בידיים, אבל זה לא יימשך הרבה זמן משום שסו גדילה במהירות רבה כמו כל גורת לברדור, ובקרוב המעיל הכחול של "גור נחייה באימון" כבר לא יעלה עליה. אור-אל, אחותה בת-אל, שגם תרמה שנת שירות למרכז, והמשפחה שלהן כבר גידלו עוד שני גורי נחייה עבור המרכז: שאנון ומקסי. סו היא הגורה הראשונה שאור- אל מגבלת בעצמה. אין ספק שכאשר היא תגדל היא תישן פחות ותהיה הרבה יותר פעילה בקבלת אורחים ומבקרים למרכז מהמקום שלה מאחרי דלפק הקבלה. סו היא נציגה מעולה של הגורים הרבים הנמצאים כעת אצל משפחות האומנות שהם כלבי הנחייה של העתיד! אור-אל אומרת שהדבר המאתגר ביותר הוא להקדיש לסו את תשומת הלב שהיא זקוקה לה, ולבצע את המטלות הרבות של חיברות גור נחייה עתידי. אנו מאחלים לאור-אל ולסו הרבה הצלחה בשנה הקרובה!
